It has been nearly one hundred years since the tax code in North Carolina has seen significant change. Assumptions made in the 1920′s are no longer relevant to the social and economic environment of today, and consequently our state budget reacts in strange and unexpected ways year to modern economic pressures after year. Running a 21st century North Carolina under 19th Century rules is not only wasteful… it is dangerous. Our budget is stretched so thin that cuts made to any program run the risk of putting thousands of our own citizens in deep physical, emotional, or economic peril.
The North Carolina Social Justice Project is proud to be working with Together NC, a coalition of over 120 state-level organizations to call for significant and long-term changes to our tax system. While any large change may be painful in the beginning, the enduring health and competitiveness of our State is at risk if we choose to do nothing. Together NC, with help from NCSJP, will be asking our legislators to take the much-need step forward in creating real and sustainable changes in revenue generation to ensure that North Carolina progresses smoothly and successfully into the future.
Spending isn’t the problem and we can’t cut our way to prosperity – reforming the fundamental way North Carolina collects revenue is absolutely critical to our State’s economic health.
