Successes

What does NCSJP do? It’s almost easier to tell you what we don’t do! Here are some of our major accomplishments in 2010:

Activate
Designed and began implementation of the NCSJP Fellows Program, a pilot project of organizing college students throughout the state to learn to solve problems and implement solutions for progressive change.  Pilot implementation is planned for early 2011 at UNC – Greensboro.
Partnered with Action for Children NC to organize and administer the North Carolina Partnership of Educational Opportunity, a coalition of concerned organizations that seeks to find solutions to some of our state’s most challenging educational issues.
Partnered with the YWCA of the Greater Triangle to plan and produce MLK Day study circles, a program designed to challenge participants’ view of race in America in the 21st century.
Motivate
Successfully lobbied at the NC General Assembly for, and against, a variety of bills during the 2010 session.  We provided significant assistance on the passage of the NC Homeowner and Homebuyer Protection Act, and were able to get stronger protections inserted into the DNA Collection Act.
As one of the original members of the Great Schools in Wake County coalition, NCSJP continues to work to monitor and speak-out on issues of educational policy as it relates to the Wake County assignment policy.  NCSJP supports a diverse and inclusive assignment policy.
Educate
Created the NCSJP Community Voices discussion series, designed to bring information and ideas to the people of North Carolina on topics both relevant and under-explored.
Issued a preliminary report on the state of foster care in North Carolina, specifically as it relates to the implementation of the FCA in NC.  Follow-up reports on various areas of weakness are expected mid-to-late 2011.
Organized and produced Safe Schools, Fair Schools – A Community Dialogue About Out of School Suspension in North Carolina, a day-long summit on suspension issues in NC and offering possible solutions.   This was produced by NCPEO, a coalition co-founded by NCSJP.
