Diverse Redistricting
It’s been awhile since we spent some time on the Wake County School Board debacle, and in some respects things have calmed down a bit on that front. But since it is a redistricting year, things are getting dicey once again.
The Board of Education will meet this evening to discuss the redistricted election maps for future Board elections, including this year’s election of the five districts up on October 11–Districts 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 (Kevin Hill, Keith Sutton, Anne McLaurin, Carolyn Morrison and Ron Margiotta). Today’s agenda includes a vote on approving the new district election map as well as voting on reductions in force for school-based clerical and district administrative positions. There will be no public comment at tomorrow’s meeting. The public can still email Board members about the proposals.
Superintendent Tony Tata has given more details on two student assignment proposals in the running to be recommended to the Board in June for the 2012-13 school year. The plans, developed by a committee appointed by Tata, will be revealed on May 23, and both having proximity as the main driving force of assignment.
One plan, the Community-Based Choice Plan, is based on the proposal by education consultant Michael Alves, sponsored by the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the Wake Education Partnership. Another plan, the Balanced Base plan, focuses on student achievement along with proximity. Tata says he will take public comment before presenting any of the plans to the Board of Education. Nine plans were developed by the staff committee, and all nine plans will be available for public comment.
We’ll be watching to see what happens at the meeting tonight – it’s never dull!
