Strained Logic

The Wake County Board of Education is like a tumor, growing larger in the belly of Wake County.  It is uncomfortable, to be sure, but we’re not quite sure yet whether or not it will metastasize and start destroying everything else, or simply remain benign and allow its easy removal.  Either way, we feel like it’s time to go see a doctor.

Mr. Tedesco (would it be wrong to call him the tumor?) continues to defy the rules of logic, buy attempting to explain and clarify his position on assignments.  At last week’s meeting, he describes the logic of creating high poverty schools (starting at minute 55), and he also is heard claiming that savings in transportation costs will help augment the classrooms and boost performance at Walnut Creek Elementary, if it opens with a high concentration of low income students.  If you can make sense of it, kudos to you.

The Board continues to work on its 2011-12 Student Assignment plan, and there will now be a public hearing and specially called Board meeting on Tuesday, February 15.  The application period for magnet and calendar application schools has been delayed to February 21 through March 7.  View the entire Student Assignment plan online, and video from the public hearings also can be viewed online.

Today’s Board of Education meeting’s agenda is online.  There is no work session, and  Supt. Tony Tata will be sworn in at a 4 pm ceremony.  The Board meeting begins at 5:30 pm, and public comment is scheduled at 6 pm.  Sign ups for public comment are expected to be online as well as in person before the meeting.
