Plans Require Planning
Things have been relatively quiet on the Wake County diversity debate for the past few weeks, mainly because the Board has stopped saying much of anything to anyone. But the blissful silence was punctured by Chairman Margiotta as he gave his remarks to the Summer Leadership Conference of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce earlier today. About the best thing we can say about the remarks is that at least they were delivered by Margiotta’s gruff baritone instead of Tedesco’s insipid whine. But I digress.
The most consistently frustrating aspects of the Board’s new proposals is that there are, in fact, no proposals! They constantly allude to their new “plans”, “zones”, and “policies”, but we have seen precious few details. Tedesco’s grand presentation a few months ago had plenty of time-lines and steps, but it is impossible to see how he can meet even his own requirements at this point. Is it really so much to ask that the school board have a plan in place before they destroy the current one?
Again and again, the new majority on the Wake County School Board belies their own inability to effectively lead the district. One of the first lessons any leader learns is that to achieve a specific result, a solid, well-reasoned plan is necessary, and if we can agree on anything, it’s that John Tedesco standing in front of Power Point slides and talking about what needs to be done is not a solid plan. Plans require planning, pure and simple, and planning is hard work.
There is a old saying that goes “Speak less of what you will do and more about what you have done.” We would like the Board to take that advice – we promise it will serve them well.
