Tiny mind, big mouth
Most of the time when our elected officials say stupid things, it is pretty easy to understand that, as outrageous as it may seem to an intelligent, thinking person, the official is trying to reach what they consider to be their core constituency. But every now and again, you have to wonder who the heck these people answer to.
The debate this week that grew up around the Arizona immigration law has apparently provided the perfect platform for the conservatives to spout all sorts of silliness, for some reason all directed at the children of immigrants. The new-found vitriol centers around “birth right” citizenship, the suddenly-controversial policy that has been granting U.S. citizenship to any child born in the country since 1868. Never-mind that the 14th amendment guarantees this right to citizenship.
On Tuesday, Lindsey Graham, the Senator from the Carolina to the South, has called for a constitutional amendment to fix this fictional problem. And since then, conservatives have been falling over themselves to out-stupid his statements. Want a laugh? Read some of this – let’s just say it’s creative.
Thankfully, North Carolina has been fortunate to have avoided most of this inanity, with a few notable exceptions. Let’s make sure none of our representatives decide to jump on this already sinking boat.
