DNA, Ethics, and Homes-Oh my!

We were down at the General Assembly all day yesterday, and we had some mixed results. The two bills that we are actively working on, the Homeowner and Homebuyer Protection Act and the DNA collections bill, both had some time on the House floor yesterday. Debate on both was colorful, and sometimes heated. In addition, both the House and Senate passed differing versions of ethics reform.

The Homeowner and Homebuyer Protection Act received it’s third and final positive hearing, so it will be sent to a committee to reconcile with the Senate bill passed last year.  There were some concessions made, but this version is still strong than the one passed in the Senate last year.  Chances are good that we will see this bill on the Governor’s desk this year.  While not as strong as it could be, we are very happy with the bill as it stand now.

However, the DNA collections bill also received a favorable hearing in the House, making it one step closer to passing the chamber.  Debate was very, very interesting, with cross-over from one side to another.  In the end, the House passed it 89 to 26, which means we still have work to do.  The only bright spot here is that the Assembly seems pretty determined to recess by the end of the week, so it is doubtful the time exists to push this thorough.  It is possible, however, so we’re keeping a good eye on it.
