Business as usual on Day 2

For those of us who perpetually hope for certain members of the General Assembly to receive a spontaneous dose of common sense while they are away from the Capital City, remarks today by House Minority Leader Paul “Skip” Stam

Paul Stam

House Minority Leader Paul "Skip" Stam

brought us back to reality. When commenting on what the House proposes to do regarding education funding this year, Stam flippantly remarked, “The last time I looked, when I rode by elementary schools, they were open, there were students there, there were teachers there.  When I rode by the universities, the universities were open, there were students there, there were professors there, there were plenty of administrators there.”

While true that the schools are still open, there are just a few thousand less teachers, making less money, and being supported by a few thousand less administrators, in a state that is already ranks 44th in per-pupil spending (behind such educational power-house states such as Mississippi, West Virginia, and Louisiana).  I suppose we should not be surprised by Stam’s comments, however, as moments before  when he was asked about specifics of the Republican budget plan, he stated, “Protecting teachers is not the same as protecting education.” Hmmmmm… I’m willing to bet millions of parents around North Carolina beg to differ.

Your move, Skip.
